The Summer House
Momma Leighellen's Book Review

Summer reading has begun!!! Here’s my review of The Summer House by Lauren K. Denton out June 2020.

While I wait for my copies of “Get a Life Chloe Brown” and “The Boyfriend Project” to arrive in the mail, I decided to read “The Summer House” by Lauren Denton.  I started it after dinner last night and finished it in bed this morning!  I love when a book is un-put-downable!  And this one was just that.

Synopsis

This sweet story is just the heartwarming, fresh start tale I needed to keep me going this week.  It follows 28 year old Lilly Bishop who wakes up one day to a note from her husband that he is moving out and wants a divorce.  She decides that instead of moving back home that she’ll make a fresh start in an elderly planned community called Safe Harbor Village. She is hired on to be their hair dresser, a nod to her childhood when she helped her mom in her salon.  Her boss, Rose, is one tough cookie but she takes a shine to Lilly and helps her move forward.

“Sometimes the hardest step is the first one.  After that it gets easier.”

Review

This is one of those books that feels like a hug from an old friend. Part buddy read part love story, it is heartwarming tale of friendship and new beginnings.   Rose and Lilly form an unlikely friendship and Lilly’s salon becomes the hub of town gossip.  Sprinkled throughout the storyline are “bulletins” from the HOA that highlight what’s going on in the community.  They are hilarious and insightful and truly set the stage for all that is to come in both Lilly’s story but also for the residents at Safe Harbor.  There are also letters from Rose to her deceased best friend and sister in law, that help fill in the back story for the growth Rose goes through throughout the book.

A wonderful story of starting over and finding yourself, no matter your age!  Thank you to TLC Book Tours, author Lauren K. Denton, and Thomas Nelson Publishing for sending me an ARC copy to read and review.
