Civil Rights Trail
Momma Leighellen's Book Review

Whoโ€™s ready for a road trip?ย  What better way to plan your future outing than with the Civil Rights Trail : ๐’† ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ด๐’๐’—๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’• from @debofficially ?!

I feel like this Civil Rights Trail book perfectly combined my love of my two favorite things – history and travel!ย  I am a hands on learner and I love to travel! Every summer, my boys + I hit the road to explore together.ย  After all weโ€™ve learned from this past year about racial relations in our country, Iโ€™m excited to give this guide a try. My eldest son lives in North Carolina, so Iโ€™m taking this with me when I visit.ย

This book offers a glimpse into the story of Black Americaโ€™s fight for freedom and equality by taking you to the places where these events in history happened. From landmarks to celebrations, you can plan a trip that will help you experience a tangible piece of history!

Overview

The Civil Rights Trail guide begins with a large, full color map of the states included in the trail.ย  It includes SC, Georgia, Alabama, Missisippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia.ย  In the forward, the author explains why she chose to write this book and all the things she added as she started writing.ย  I love that she includes full color images, restaurants to eat at, and black owned shops. ย

The book provides multiple itineraries.  You can choose to travel the entire trail, or just take short excursions on city at a time.  With stops at multiple historic Civil Rights sites you can learn about Dr. Kingโ€™s legacy at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, be transformed at the Emmett Till Intrepid Center, and stand tall with Little Rock Nine at their memorial in Arkansas.

The author, Deborah Douglas, is an award winning journalist.  I enjoyed how she provides her perspective and knowledge throughout, including ways to engage with local communities by supporting Black-owned businesses and seeking out activist groups while in town.  She even includes quotes an stories about each place that bring these trips to life and makes history come alive.  The back of the map includes a fold out map with a timeline.

Journey through history, understand the struggles of the past, and get inspired to create a better future with this fantastic travel guide!ย  Thank you to @moonguides @debofficially @tlcbooktours @tlcdiversity for the book to read + review!

QOTD:ย  What city, museum, landmark or historic site on the trail would you want to visit?ย
