I admit this is my first Michelle Cox book, but it definitely won’t be the last! This is actually the FIFTH book that features the power duo of Henrietta Von Harmon and Inspector Clive Howard, but it read well as a stand alone.
All of these books are historical mysteries set in 1930’s Chicago. In this story, Henrietta is suffering from depression after a recent miscarriage. Clive takes on a new case hoping to boost the baby blues for Henrietta. Meanwhile Henrietta’s sister has asked her to help her beau in a missing persons case. Both cases are more than they bargained for and weave together the mystery of a spiritualist, an insane asylum, and a lost girl.
The writing style fully immerses you in the story! It is incredibly detailed, full of classic twists and turns, and the historical elements are well researched. The Mundelein Seminary, Bohemian Home for Orphans and Dunning Asylum (also called the Tomb for the Living) are all real places. The story exposes the horrific range of treatment for patients dealing with mental illness and the system so rife with abuse.
I devoured this book in one sitting! This is a truly entertaining and suspenseful page turner. I think fans of both mystery and historical fiction will enjoy the sstory. It does make me want to go back and read her earlier books to fully appreciate how Henrietta and Clives relationship has grown.
