Eye of Zeus Book Review

Eye of Zeus Review
Momma Leighellen's Book Review

What a fun escape!

If you have Middle Grade kiddos that enjoy fast action, greek mythology, and kids going on quests with their buddies then this is the book to get for them! My kids are home from school because of the pandemic so this was the perfect escape from reality for them without being too heavy.

This book follows an orphan named Phoebe who’s bounced around the foster care system. One day at school, things get a little weird and she finds out she’s actually the daughter of Zeus! She has to head to Olympus to try to break a prophecy. Two of her best buddies go with her, providing depth and humor to the story.

Personally, I loved that we had a female protagonist! There are plenty of hero action books with male leads so it was fun to see a young girl in this role. Phoebe is sassy and funny and tough without being brash. I enjoyed that this book felt light and wasn’t bogged down with crass humor, poor language, or negative stereotypes. We also weren’t distracted by some side story romance. I also enjoyed how loyal Phoebe was and that she leaned on her friends for help as they solved riddles and collected talisman.  The ending was predictibale but comforting.  I think most young kids want that happy, fairy tale ending.

Yes, there’s plenty of comparisons to Percy Jackson but it’s Greek Mythology – those stories are as old as time so presenting them to a fresh new crop of kiddos is a great idea. Any time we can reach readers with whit and whimsy and a little education thrown in, I’m all for it! If your kids loved Percy Jackson, Charlie Bone, or The Last Kids on Earth series they should enjoy this. Or if your kiddo loves mythology, this is a fun way for them to learn more!
