The Refuge
Momma Leighellen's Book Review

Oh sweet Mommas. The Refuge is one book you don’t want to miss.

If you are looking for a new bedtime story to read to your kiddos, I highly recommend The Refuge by @sandraleguen.autrice! The story is sweet and the artwork divine. This will be a quick favorite!

This is a story of a little girl, Jeanette, who befriends the new kid at her school named Illiana. Jeanette begins a friendship with the little girl even though she doesn’t speak the same language. She finds out through drawings that Illiana is a refugee who fled her country.

Through simple dialogue and stunning art, the history of Illiana’s journey is told. Jeanette is patient and welcoming and when she tells her parents about her new friend, they react with empathy and understanding. They eventually invite her entire family over and we learn her parents history and the way they came to their new home.

I love so much about this story. First, the underlying STEM reference as both girls love math + science is so refreshing in children’s literature. Secondly, this is a wonderful way to discuss a complex topic with your children and encourage them how to behave around someone who is different. And finally, I love that the children take the lead in these relationships. It is all very profound.

This book was originally published in France and now has been brought to new life with bright & colorful artwork. This is a book about sharing our stories and finding refuge in friendship, family, and a new home.
