The Lives of Edie Pritchard
Momma Leighellens Book Giveaway

I am a sucker for multi-multi-generational stories and books about women who overcome. So naturally I couldn’t wait to read The Lives of Edie Pritchard by Larry Watson.  I had never read a book by this author before, but this story of one woman trying to navigate life on her own terms really pulled me in!

“…it just seems like every time I run into someone who knew me then, I feel like a part of me vanishes….I mean, all of us are someone else in the eyes of others. And for all I know, maybe that other is as true, as real, as the person we believe we are. But the thing is, when you’re back home, you never have a chance to be someone other than who you were then. Even if you never were that person.”

Wow!  That struck me.  I’ve moved a lot in my life and this quote really struck me.  It’s almost jarring to face who you used to be.  This story follows a strong, smart, beautiful Montana woman named Edie through three phases of her life.  First as a young bank teller, then as a single mom, and finally as a grandma. But she is often trapped by her looks and how they define her opportunities. Two brothers fight over her. Her second husband is possessive and jealous. Her daughter resents her. Even as a granda, she’s harassed by a younger man. The Lives of Edie Pritchard tells the story of one woman just trying to be herself, even as multiple men attempt to categorize and own her.

“You might be out here alone someday with what you thought would be your life. And a gust of wind might blow your heart open like a screen door. And slam it just as fast.’
