Channel Kindness: Stories of Kindness and Community by Born This Way Foundation Reporters

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“No matter how unfair or discouraging the world may seem at certain points, kindness is actually abundant at all times.”

Lady Gaga’s story is incredible. Early on she was plagued by massive insecurities and health problems. She has openly struggled with PTSD and depression from enduring years of sexual abuse and bullying. Through it all, she believes in the importance of being kind to yourself and being kind to others. She and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded the Born This Way Foundation. It is a nonprofit organization that dedicates itself to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they’ve collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world. It proves that kindness truly is the universal language. These stories are compiled into this collection, Channel Kindness, providing a space for these youth to share their stories.

“Performing an act of kindness can redeem and heal you just as much as it can transform the person you choose to help.”

Contained in these pages is proof of a kinder, braver world envisioned by Gaga over eight years ago. These are stories from around the globe of young people performing random acts of kindness, standing up for others, and finding the quiet courage it takes to stand up for themselves. Her goal was to make kindness “cool”. To validate the emotions of young people around the world and eliminate the stigma of mental health. She believes the voice of these young people matters because they are filled with hope, compassion, and commitment to community.

“Being a kind and respectful friend includes opening your mind to other perspectives, pushing yourself to understand someone else even if you haven’t experienced the same things, and committing yourself to being there in a supportive capacity.”

These stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is about inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world.

This would make a wonderful gift to a teen struggling with anxiety, depression, or identity. It provides hope and a path to freedom through loving others and giving back.
