This is a dual narrative story, alternating between the viewpoints of Ellis, a woman coming to grips with the crippling loss of a child; and Raven, a young girl raised deep in the woods of Washington and hidden from culture and society.  

The novel starts off with a gut wrenching tragedy that is every mother’s nightmare. After learning of a horrible betrayal, Ellis makes a decision that changes her entire world.  She then spirals into drugs and alcohol, choosing to leave behind all that brings her joy.  Meanwhile, a young girl named Raven is growing up secluded and self reliant.  Isolated from most people, she yearns for more. 

Eventually these two worlds collide as the plot builds from one shocking revelation to another. While this book deals with heavy topics like mental health and child loss, it focusses more on the strength of the human spirit and the power of healing.  Through stunning descriptions, the author does an incredible job of making nature come alive and become part of the narrative. The Light Through the Leaves is a beautiful story about the power of nature to heal, the intricacy of mother-daughter relationships, friendship, and found family. I absolutely loved this book!
